Blue Cross customers who use Piedmont Healthcare services will not face any interruption of services due to the contract dispute between the insurance company and the health care provider.

According to the Governor’s office, the two sides have reached a “handshake” agreement, with a full contract and announcement to follow.

“A handshake agreement between Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia and Piedmont Healthcare was made in the governor’s office late this afternoon.” Gov. Nathan Deal’s office said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

The existing contract between Blue Cross and Piedmont ran out April 1, resulting in Blue Cross treating Piedmont doctors as out-of-network providers.

The dispute between the two health care giants has been of particular interest to state officials since the state uses Blue Cross/Blue Shield for state employees, many of whom are patients of Piedmont.
