Fraud Alert: No, you can't register to vote by phone in Georgia

The Scam: Officials in several states have reported a scam involving scammers attempting to register residents to vote over the telephone and gaining personal information in the process. While the Secretary of State’s office is not aware of any attempts made to do this in Georgia, residents should be aware of the scam.

Some of the callers identify themselves as being affiliated with a company called TurboVote, but the secretary of state’s office says TurboVote is not responsible for these calls.

The Reality: In Georgia, you can’t register to vote over the phone and no official entity would call you to solicit such a registration. To legitimately register to vote or to contact SOS Election Office – visit: http://sos.ga.gov/index.php/elections.

What to do if you are contacted: If you are contacted by one of these scammers, please contact the Secretary of State’s Office immediately. The last day to register to vote in the Nov. 6 Statewide General or Municipal Referendum Election is Oct. 9.
