If fireworks aren’t your chosen way to ring in the new year Monday night, remember those fireworks your neighbors are setting off are legal until 1 a.m.
While the state encourages residents to be a good neighbor and to remember those who may have difficulty processing loud noises such as those with prior trauma or those on the autism spectrum, keep in mind the loud noises are completely legal much later on New Year’s Eve and July 4.
For those who will be setting off fireworks, State insurance commissioner Ralph Hudgens is offering the following safety tips:
- Always read and follow label directions
- Only use fireworks outdoors
- Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks
- Only light one firework at a time
- Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks
- Fireworks should only be used with close adult supervision
- Never give fireworks to small children
- Be sure to have water handy
- Never throw fireworks at another person
- Remember to call your local 911 for emergencies
Also, while fireworks are completely legal, there are parameters. It is still illegal to light fireworks within 100 yards of a hospital, nursing home, prison or gas station.
Officials are also reminding pet owners to secure their pets Monday night, as animals that are spooked by fireworks are known to run off.
