Off-duty police officer thwarts robbery on Memorial Drive

An attempted robbery at a package store in Stone Mountain on New Year’s Eve was thwarted by an off-duty Pine Lake police officer who shot and killed the suspect.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked by the DeKalb County Police Department to investigate the officer involved shooting.

According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that at approximately 11:02 p.m., an unidentified male entered a business located at 5345 Memorial Drive in Stone Mountain with a firearm.

Police say the subject fired a shot and told employees and several customers in the store to get on the floor. An off-duty Pine Lake Police Department officer was working security inside the store and immediately fired at the subject. The subject fled, but collapsed in front of the store. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

At this time, police have not been able to identify the subject.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The GBI will conduct its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
