Off-duty police officer fires back after suspects shot at him while he was helping a robbery victim

On Monday, Jan. 7, the GBI was asked by the DeKalb County Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting involving a Clarkston Police Department officer who was working a part-time security job.

According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that late Monday night the Clarkston Officer observed a male victim of a robbery in the parking lot at the Red Lobster at 2522 Candler Road. The officer approached and attempted to aid the male.

According to the GBI, while the officer was attending to the male victim, four other male subjects entered a vehicle and shot at the officer and victim as they drove away.

The officer fired his weapon at the suspects in the vehicle, shooting two of them. The vehicle exited the parking lot and traveled further down Candler Road where the vehicle came to rest.

Officials say four suspects exited the vehicle and two of them fled the scene. Their identity and location are currently unknown.

The other two suspects were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with gunshot injuries. One of them died while the other sustained non life-threatening injuries.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The GBI will conduct its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
