Fire breaks out at Walker County landfill

CHICKAMAUGA — Firefighters in Walker County responded to an early morning fire at a local landfill.

Walker County spokesman Joe Legge said material that had been brought to the landfill on Tuesday flared up in the construction and demolition section. This section of the landfill houses building waste such as lumber, glass and brick.

The fire began at about 2 a.m.

Firefighters with Walker County Fire Rescue used about 35,000 gallons of water to contain the blaze, which covered about a fourth of an acre.

Landfill and Public Works crews also smothered the area with dirt to further combat hot spots.

Legge said crews will continue to monitor this area in case the fire rekindles. A cause for the fire remains undetermined.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division has been advised of the incident and is monitoring the situation.
