GBI: Man shot and killed after attacking Roswell police officer with stick

ROSWELL — An altercation between a police officer and a man at a Roswell gas station ended with an injury to the police officer’s arm and the officer shooting and killing his assailant.

On Thursday, July 4, the Roswell Police Department asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation.

According to the GBI, a Roswell police officer entered the Shell Gas Station/Food Mart located at 890 Atlanta Street to make a purchase. While inside the store, the officer encountered a male subject later identified as 47-year-old Olivio Sandoval Diaz at the front counter being confronted by the cashier for failure to pay for an item.

Police say Diaz was in possession of a long wooden stick and began to attack the officer with the stick. The officer tased Diaz in an attempt to stop him, but was unsuccessful. As Diaz continued to attack and struck the officer with the stick, the officer drew his weapon and fired, striking the Diaz.

Diaz was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The officer was injured in his arm during the altercation with the subject. The officer was treated and released from the hospital.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
