Tuvayhun: Beatitudes for a Wounded World

The Oglethorpe University Singers and Chorale, in collaboration with the OU Literature department, welcome guest Poet-in-Residence Charles Anthony Silvestri to campus for the Georgia premiere performance of Kim Andre’ Arnesen’s new setting of his ethereal Tuvayhun: Beatitudes for a Wounded World. The text for the piece is partially in Aramaic, quoting the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount, and in English, featuring poetry by Silvestri. These poems form a response to each Beatitude. Set for an eclectic orchestra, the piece will be performed by the OU Singers and Chorale, who will be joined in their performance by OU Affiliate Artist, Soprano Dr. Wanda Yang-Temko and Baritone Washington Isaac Holmes. Other music on the program all feature poetry or music by Silvestri, including Across the Vast Eternal Sky by Ola Gjeilo, Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine and Sleep by Eric Whitacre, I Want to Fly, by OU Singers and Chorale Director Dr. Timothy Michael Powell, and Each Morning She Walks, featuring music by Silvestri and poetry by Eric Whitacre.

Charles Anthony Silvestri, lyricist, author, and composer, has worked with other artists from all over the world to create texts tailor-made for their commissions and specific artistic needs. He enjoys the challenge of solving these creative problems and has provided custom choral texts, opera libretti, program notes and other writing for composers including Eric Whitacre, Ola Gjeilo, Dan Forrest, and OU Faculty member and Director of Choral Activities Dr. Timothy Michael Powell, as well as for groups ranging from high schools to the Houston Grand Opera, from the King’s Singers to the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, from Westminster Choir College to Westminster Abbey. As a clinician Silvestri speaks to choirs, classes, and concert audiences about his works, the creative process, the marriage of words and music, and about his collaborative relationships with composers. He is the author of A Silver Thread (GIA 2019), a retrospective of almost 20 years of his lyric poetry. He lives with his children in Lawrence, KS. Kim André Arnesen is one of the most frequently performed classical composers from Norway today. He grew up in Trondheim, and while being a daily follower of MTV, and no one understood why he was such a big The Cure fan at the age of 10, he also played the piano at the music school and was a chorister in the Nidaros Cathedral Boys´ Choir. He was educated at the Music Conservatory in Trondheim. With a big interest in baroque music, contemporary classical music, and popular music, Kim could have taken many roads, but choral music became his greatest passion. As a composer, he had his first performance at the age of 18 with the boys´ choir. Since then he has written music that has been performed by choirs all over the world.
